So sometimes a dog has a really thick, smothering layer of dandruff flakes. The kind you can try and exfoliate with a flea comb at length and the dandruff seems to be several MILLIMETERS thick.
It’s time to think about dissolving AND exfoliating this.
It’s important that the skin be able to breathe. Infections can start when the skin is choked out by a layer or dead skin. Especially a THICK layer.
So I did some digging and I learned some things.
- I learned: Neutrogena came out with a new Coal Tar shampoo called Neutrogena T-Sal instead of Neutrogena T-GEL. Cool!
- And I learned the difference between “keratolytic” and “exfoliation”
- And that both may be important.
- I got a list from several articles of shampoos that are effective against a layer of dandruff. (List to follow) and
- I did a keyword search of keratolytic shampoos (not for dogs because they’re usually crap) to see what comes up and Lo and Behold, one of my favorite soaps showed up – Sal-3 I used to sell here at the clinic. I’m a big fan.
